MAN is essentially a mental being. His mind leads his life and his body.He aspires for what is beyond him through the mind, receives and assimilates in the mind and the mind-infused heart. It is necessary, therefore, that the mind should not be in a restless, chaotic condition that it normally is amidst the myriad distractions and fleeting occupations of everyday life. By some discipline or by exertion of will the activities of the mind must be brought under control and the mind steadily taught to keep itself above the whirlpool of thoughts and sensational movements, fixed on its aim. Thereby the mind learns to gather itself, keep collected and calm, building up a condition in which concentration becomes natural and reception of the spiritual gains effortless. The waves of the limited sense and thought mind subside leaving room for the action of the larger and deeper Consciousness that is behind the surface levels of being, with the result that progress in the Path is accelerated and the fulfilment ensured.
